WHERE USE MULTIMEDIA

1.     Multimedia is appropriate whenever a human interface connects a human user to electronic information of any kind. It enhances the text-only interface by gaining and holding attention, thus improves information retention.

2.     Multimedia can be used in various sectors such as business, administration, government, broadcasting, entertainment, transportation and so on.

a.    Business

              i.        Traditionally, communication in business is done verbally, on printed media, slide shows and videos. Multimedia can recreate all these types of communication to be more interesting. Business applications for multimedia include presentations, training, marketing, advertising, product demos, databases, catalogues and networked communications.

ii.        Now, multimedia applications are getting more advanced and complex. Below are more examples of multimedia applications which are getting more popular in today’s business environment.

Application
Benefits

Virtual shopping
a.     Shopping convenience with wide network system.
b.     Cost saving because not buying through the supplier
c.     Users can have more selections and time to choose the product that is suitable to their needs.
Video conferencing
a.     Eliminate the traveling cost and save time

Financial service
a.     Ability to withdraw, transfer and check balance in your account through network.
b.     Check your latest stock price in real time.
Advertising
a.     Information can be presented in effective and creative way.

b.    Government

           i.        Government is taking advantage of multimedia by incorporating multimedia into their administration system. Beginning in 1998, Malaysia is planning to make a full use of multimedia by introducing e-government, paperless office, video conferencing, multimedia kiosks and multimedia electronic mail.

ii.        Realizing the potential of multimedia, the government has made a big move to exploit this potential by introducing Multimedia Super Corridor with seven flagship applications. The MSC will also accelerate Malaysia's entry into the Information Age, and through it, help actualize Vision 2020.

iii.        There are four main objectives :

1.     To increase the efficiency and productivity in production, delivering products and service for both public and private sectors.

2.     To introduce the network of supply and demand of local multimedia industry to international market.

3.     To increase the value of infrastructure placed within MSC with suitable technology including KLIA, Putrajaya, highway network and electronic highway.

4.     To stimulate growth of e-government through Putrajaya to be more transparent, flexible and responsive.

benefit of multimedia

1.     Multimedia is very expensive, difficult and time-consuming to develop, yet more and more commonly done. There are several reasons that applying multimedia is worthwhile.

  1. Ease of use

·         Making an application easier to use can increase user’s effectiveness, thus increase in productivity.
·         Users will be less dependent on instructions; therefore training users also will be easier and done in shorter time.

  1. Intuitive Interface

·         Intuitive interface means that the choice of images, icons, visual and audible responses, and reaction to user input are obvious. The user knows to choose the correct control (button) for a function simply because the controls look like what it is intended to do.
·         For example, a button with an image of a house will bring to “home” page or the first screen on the application.

  1. Immersive experience

·         Immersive experience is a software interface term, exists when the software application takes over then entire computer screen.
·         Users is said to have an immersive experience when they are concentrating on using the application without distraction of the operating system environment.
·         This method of focusing the user’s attention exclusively on the software application’s interface provides a higher level of productivity.

  1. Self-paced Interaction and Better Retention

·         Especially for educational and training purposes, the ability to process information at one’s pace is very useful and helps users to learn at their speed.

  1. Better Understanding of the Content

·         The elements of text, images, animation, video and sound provide richer and broader range of information.
·         Many studies have shown that students learn better and more easily when information is presented in ways that stimulate several of the student’s senses concurrently.
·         For example, reading text about the topic of solar system and how planets circling the sun and compare it with an animation and voice narration explaining the details.

  1. Cost Effectiveness

·         Compare multimedia software and non-multimedia software, for non-multimedia software, training manual and technical support can be quite costly. But for multimedia software these are not needed.
·         Users are more likely to upgrade to the next version and purchase more products from companies that are applying multimedia technology in their software.

  1. More Fun

·         By making multimedia application more fun to use, you can also make it more efficient.
·         Fun elements help users feel more at home and make them willing to spend more time using the application.

history of multimedia

1.     When computers first introduced in 1960s, they were seen as a machine to solve complex mathematical calculations. At that time computers are all text based and command are accessed by typing into the command line.

2.     Only late 1970s, people are starting to talk about multimedia when a small company called Atari brought the fun of a video arcade into home users.

3.     During the late 1970s and early 1980s, researchers for Xerox Corporation develop a new way of interacting with a computer, a device called a mouse. Using this new pointing device and GUI (Graphical User Interface) which was developed by Apple, multimedia is becoming increasingly popular.

4.     In 1985, a new software product called VideoWorks was introduced and then evolved to what we know now as Macromedia Director – the most widely used cross-platform multimedia authoring tool.

5.     In the same year, Intel had launched 80386 processors. This computing power is enough to handle multimedia applications and efficiently use the CD-ROM devices launched that same year.

6.     In 1987, Mac II was introduced equipped with color monitor.

7.     One year after that CD-R (CD-Recordable) technology enabled users to create their own CDROM or Music CD.

8.     In 1989, a new product called Video Toaster is available so that users can produce video special effects, computer animation and graphics affordably. In the same year, SoundBlaster sound card was introduced which give computer audio capabilities and play MIDI music.

9.     Then during 1990s, computers are more technologically advanced which means computers now have increased in processing power, better operating system, more memory, larger storage and higher video and audio capabilities. While computers becoming more sophisticated, computer also becoming cheaper.

10.  Because of all these improvements, multimedia is widely accepted and used as practical and useful tools because of its effectiveness and efficiency.

MORPHING

Morphing is a popular effect in which one image transform into another .In morphing the warping of one still or moving image into another take place. This is rather like twinning in that you define the start image and the end image but the two images are completely different. The software works out a sequence of steps so that the first image appears to change gradually into the second object. In morphing setting key point is crucial for smooth transition between two images.
Morphing automatically animate the change of one image into another as a special effect. It is the wrapping of one still or moving image into another.
Some products that offer morphing features are black belt’s easy morph and win images. Human software quiz, vales group flo, metaflo and movie.
The morphed images were built at a rate of 8 frames per second with each transition taking a total of 4 second and the number of key points was held to a minimum to shorten rendering time. The point you set in the start image will move to the corresponding point in the end image. This is important for things like eyes and noses which you want to end up in about the same place after the transition. The more key points the smoother the morph.
